When I initially began blogging in September 2008, I began using social networks such as Digg, Stumble Upon, Delicious, Yahoo Buzz and more. For a bit, I focused on Digg and Stumble Upon and even did a side-by-side experiment. Not only did Stumble Upon blow Digg away but it continues to be a primary source of my traffic over 1 year since my original experiment. The difference is I no longer have the time to use Stumble Upon or Digg, but I’m very thankful to all my outstanding readers who’ve shared my posts.
2009 OVERALL
No traffic source was as vital as Stumble Upon. Over half of my overall traffic came from the Stumble Upon referrals and toolbar. Keep in mind that I haven’t visited Stumble Upon since early January 2009 and have never spent a penny on Stumble Upon Advertising. Since I mentioned the Stumble Upon vs. Digg comparison, you may be interested to know that Digg brought a grand total of 1,963 visitors in 2009, c0mpared to 345K via Stumble Upon.
672k Visits | 345K Stumble Upon Visits (51% of all traffic)
Month-by-Month Breakdown
As you’ll see below, I’ve had up and down months with Stumble Upon traffic. However, even the down months were pretty good. Unlike early days, it’s not just one or two posts that brings in all the traffic from Stumble Upon. I’ve noticed Stumblers really seem to enjoy list posts, which my site is full of.
JAN 45K Visits | Stumble Upon = 24K visitors (52% of all traffic)
FEB 33K Visits | Stumble Upon = 15K (45% of all traffic)
MAR 30K Visits | Stumble Upon = 20K (66% of all traffic)
APR 66K Visits | Stumble Upon = 44K (67% of all traffic)
MAY 36K Visits | Stumble Upon = 15K (41% of all traffic)
JUN 22K Visits | Stumble Upon = 5K (24% of all traffic)
JUL 20K Visits | Stumble Upon = 4K (22% of all traffic)
AUG 58K Visits | Stumble Upon = 35K (59% of all traffic)
SEP 96K Visits | Stumble Upon = 61K (63% of all traffic)
OCT 75K Visits | Stumble Upon = 34K (45% of all traffic)
NOV 87K Visits | Stumble Upon = 36K (41% of all traffic)
DEC 100K Visits| Stumble Upon = 49K (49% of all traffic)
In looking at the month-by-month comparison above, my worst month was July as I had just over 20K total visits. It’s no coincidence that the traffic Stumble Upon brought that month was 4K visitors. My best months, September and December, was pretty much all Stumble Upon and Google traffic.
