It’s no secret that the iPad is a success. This device has exploded in popularity while thwarting every expert’s sales predictions. The iPad can replace your book collection, organize your life, help you lose weight, entertain you for hours with brilliant games, play music and of course my favorite…stream movies and television shows.
I’m not going to talk about Hulu Plus today. The free content available is very limited and I can’t say I’m sold on a $10 per month subscription with Netflix being available. Netflix is the ultimate movie streaming application and the first we’ll cover in the series of five free apps.
Netflix
The Netflix application is free, but you have to be a Netflix subscriber to get access to all the amazing content. Not only can you view and update your Netflix Queue, but you can watch any of the Instant Watch content by streaming directly on your device. This is the cream of the crop in video streaming. The application works flawlessly when streaming both movies and television and saves your progress. If you download only one of the applications in this article, Netflix is a must.

ABC Player
The ABC Player App provides instant access to stream all the best ABC shows, including one of my favorites Modern Family. With 37 available shows with full episodes, you’ll be able to stream other favorites such as The Bachelorette, True Beauty, The Gates, Rookie Blue, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Flash Forward and many more. The ABC Player also saves your progress and is a handy free app to have.

Air Video Free
Air Video Free is a bit different from the rest. With this app, you can stream your personal video collection. It plays videos and many different formats, including AVI, DIVX, MKV and many more. The app works by quickly converting the video as you watch. You can convert a video and store it on your device or just stream it. Share folders on your harddrive and your iTunes playlists. It works best with Wifi, but is built for 3G as well.

Movies
Movies by Flixster is a nice compliment to the streaming video apps. Watch movie trailers, view critic reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and find showtimes for movies in theaters. You can view the top box office hits, see which movies are coming soon, watch movie trailers, lookup movie times and even purchase or rent movies from iTunes. I use this app for both movie times and the Rotten Tomatoes ratings.

IMDb
IMDb is a must for movie fans! See showtimes, watch trailers, browse photo galleries, checkout the top charts and more. Want to see the best picture award winners? How about the 250 top rated movies of all-time? IMDb has you covered. View the most popular actors and movies, play trivia, actor quotes, read their biography, see their other work and so much more. Want to learn more about a favorite movie or actor, this is the app for you.
