Over the past few months, I’ve been on a mission to find the best free Android Apps. I’ve been blown away by the large number of high quality apps that cost you nothing. Like you, I love free apps. Many free apps simply blow away those that require your hard earned cash.

I’ve spend more time than I care to mention digging through the Android Market and using tools such as AppBrain, Atrackdog and Google to determine the following list. Now that my search is finally over, I’ve cut the list of amazing apps down to the 50 best.

Music & Video

Droidsound - Droidsound gives you the flexibility to play your music that’s in retro formats like C64, Amiga and Nintendo. This app doesn’t just play music in retro formats, but the user interface is a bit retro looking as well. I’d like to see some enhancements in future releases, such as better search.

Flash Player 10.1 - The name says it all! One thing that distinguishes the Android Devices from the iPhone is this very app. With this app, you get full access to any and every website and Flash-based component. It works very well and is a must-have app for your Android device.

Liberate Your iTunes – Liberate Your Itunes from Jam11 is kinda like SlingBox for your iTunes music. Without ever connecting your Android Phone to your PC, you can easily sync your iTunes playlists and play all your music on the go. In addition to streaming your iTunes music, you have access to over 40,000 SHOUTcast radio stations. I have over 1500 songs I can now stream.  It crashed the first two times I used it, but after I restarted my Droid, it’s worked like a charm.

Pandora Radio - You probably already know about Pandora Radio, but if not you’re definitely missing out! Pandora simply gives you your own streaming radio stations you can customize. Pick a song or artist and it becomes your new station, playing all music similar to your selection. If you don’t care for a song, just give it a thumbs down and never hear it on your station again. Love a song? Just give it a thumbs up and you’ll hear it on your station more often.

Shazam – Have you ever been listening to the radio or hear some music that you wish you knew the artist, song, etc? Hold Shazam up to the speaker and it will not only analyze the track and show you the specifics, but you can save it for later, buy it or get artist info.

TuneIn Radio - You’re going to love this app! TuneIn Radio gives you the ability to stream over 40,000 channels from your Android. You can sort by local radio, music, talk, sports, by location, by language or even podcasts. I used the local radio, chose my state and city and received a list of about 40 stations or so. After about 20 seconds, the station began to stream with surprisingly good quality. Within the station itself, you have additional options such as You may like, Set alarm timer and See Show Schedule. Hopefully in the future, we’ll see more talk shows added.

Tuner – gStrings - gStrings is a chromatic tuner application measuring sound pitch and intensity. It will let you tune any musical instrument (violin, viola, violoncello, bass, guitar, piano, wind instruments).

Ringtones & Wallpaper

Ringdroid - Ringdroid lets you create your own ringtones by using music on your Android or voice. You can edit the track directly from your phone and set it as your notifications, ringtones, etc.

Zedge Ringtones & Wallpaper – Zedge is the best place to find all the best in ringtones for the Android. In addition to user submitted ringtones, you’ll get an extensive listing of wallpaper to redesign your phone.

Social & Communication

Dolphin Browser HD – Dolphin is the closest to a Firefox mobile browser I’ve seen.

Facebook for Android – Though not a perfect app, Facebook for Android offers the funtionality you need to stay on top your Facebook. Share status updates, view your News Feed, check out Events, look at friends walls and info, upload photos, share links, check your inbox and view videos.

Google Voice – These days, I can’t live without Google Voice. Currently only available in the US, Google Voice is loaded with features. You can establish one phone number for all your phones, so when someone calls you all your phones ring at once. You can also setup personalized greetings for certain people or groups. My favorite aspect of Google Voice is that Voice is transcribed into text.

Handcent SMS – Handcent SMS has countless customization options to help take your SMS’ to the next level. The beauty of this app is in the custom styles. Change the skin, theme, every little detail of your conversation list (i.e. font, pic or no pic, background color, etc), your Bubble Settings, etc. Then go on and establish your notification settings where you can enable popup, modify the popup details, choose sounds and so much more. Even the widget is awesome!

TweetCaster for Twitter – This Twitter client offers threaded messages, lists, photos and video uploading functionality and URL shortening. You can use multiple twitter accounts along with several different widget sizes and the ability to post to Facebook.

Tools & Utilities

3G Watchdog – Monitors your Mobile Internet (3G/Edge/GPRS) data usage, shows a status icon (green/orange/red) in the notif bar and a detailed report page. Widget available. Useful if your “unlimited data” plan actually has some restrictions (read the fine print!)

Advanced Task Killer – ATK kills those applications that are running on your device. This comes in handy particularly for those apps that suck up your battery. When you don’t need them, just ATK them.

AppBrain – This app is one of my absolute favorites. Not only can you install and uninstall apps from your desktop browser then sync, but the hot apps and other detailed information provided is ridiculously valuable to app lovers like myself.

ASTRO File Manager – ASTRO File Manager offers the following functionality; file manager, backup,  image and text viewer, Networking, SMB, Bluetooth, SFTP, Zip Tar, downloader, thumbnails, search files, application manager, task manager, attachments.

Call Confirm - I can’t count how many times I’ve accidentally bumped my phone and bothered someone I didn’t mean to call. Not only is this embarrassing, but it is annoying since I don’t like talking on the phone in the first place as many others don’t. Once you click on a name to call, instead of directly dialing the contact, you first get a Confirm dialog box to click. The box displays the phone number, photo and contact name and gives you a bit of a cushion before making that call. No more accidental calls.

ConnectBot – ConnectBot is a powerful open-source Secure Shell (SSH) client. It can manage simultaneous SSH sessions, create secure tunnels, and copy/paste between other applications. This client allows you to connect to Secure Shell servers that typically run on UNIX-based servers.

EStrongs File Explorer – This all-in-one file manager, AppManager & task killer is very handy. It lets you dig in and explore all the files on your device.

Google Chrome to - Google Chrome to Phone lets you easily share links, maps, and currently selected phone numbers and text between your computer running Chrome and your phone. You also need to install the Chrome browser extension on your computer, which can be found by searching for ‘Chrome to Phone’ at http://chrome.google.com/extensions/.

Google Search – Search the web and your phone with the official Google Search app. Get phone search results plus query and web site suggestions as you type, and instant results for weather, stock quotes, local businesses, and more! Refine your query, Enhanced business listings, Voice search shortcuts and hints.

Quick Settings – As an Android user, one of the things you’ll want to avoid is draining your battery too quickly. Brightness, Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS all have an effect on your battery life. You don’t need to use these settings all the time, but it’s a pain navigating to your settings and manually turning them off each time. Quick Settings works by giving you a nice quick way to click and go. You can adjust your brightness, volume, GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth and many other settings all in one shot.

PdaNet with SMS Agent - PdaNet has helped me out in a pinch where I had no internet access for my laptop. It’s your wireless tether solution. By downloading this application on your phone and the free desktop application, you can get internet access through your computer via your Android’s internet connection. As an added bonus, you can also send and receive SMS from your computer.

Speed Test - This app measure the network speed of your Android device.

Uninstaller - Remove  application easily with just one click. It displays all the vital app info to help you decide whether to remove it or not and provides search functions for applications along with other sort methods.  You can also exclude certain apps.

Wifi Analyzer – This app helps you see all the Wifi channels near you. It can also come in handy by helping you find a less crowded channel for your wireless router.

Where’s My Droid – When you lose your phone and you have it on silent, how can you find it? This app lets you text your phone to not only turn the silent mode off, but also turn your ringer volume up and prompt it to ring.

Fitness & Health

CardioTrainer – If you’re looking to get in shape, CardioTrainer can be a great tool to help you reach your goal. It features a weightloss function and many fitness activities. Record and log your progress, calorie intake and more. Voice and music is also integrated with this app.

Games & Entertainment

Alchemy – You have only four base elements: Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Combine them and their products to get more than 200 new elements. You can create a Life, Beer, Vampires, Skyscrapers and many more.

Kindle for Android – Read more than 630,000 Kindle books on your Android phone including thousands of free books. No Kindle required. Auto synchronizes your last page read between devices with Amazon Whispersync. Adjust the text size, color mode, and brightness.

Robo Defense FREE – Robo Defense is amazingly fun and addictive. It’s a tower defense game that will keep you coming back. The free version features 1 map and 11 difficulty settings to challenge you.

Talking Tom Cat – Talking Tom is your pet cat, that is also a copycat. It responds to your touch, repeats everything you say in it’s higher pitched voice and provides entertainment for everyone. You can pet him, poke and punch him or grab his tail. Record videos of Tom repeating your words and upload them to YouTube & Facebook or send them by email.

Toss It – What better way to waste time than to throw balls of trash into a waste basket? The graphics are surprisingly good and it is fun to play against others.

Productivity

ADW Launcher – If you want a launcher, you have two great choices in ADW and LauncherPro. ADW is an opensource home replacement app that gives you a much different look that the standard. It offers a customizable application drawer, drag and drop buttons and countless shortcuts and folders to redesign your device.

Apps Organizer – Organize your Android applications using labels and create label shortcuts with custom icons.

Awesome Drop (File Sync) - Your Android device is really a mini computer. You can store, access and view files on your device. Awesome Drop enhances this ability by giving you the ability to drag and drop files from your web browser to a dropbox you can use to sync with your phone. The beauty is that no account is required. You can sync any file, including documents, music, videos and photos.

Gesture Search - Gesture Search lets you quickly find a contact, a bookmark, an application, or a music track on your device by drawing on the screen. Search results are updated as you add each letter or digit and becomes better by learning from your search history.

LauncherPro - If you’re getting tired of looking at the design of the Android screens and want to do your own thing, you’re going to love this app. The best part of this app to me, other than the countless customization options, is the ability to have 7 home screens. Another useful aspect is the app drawers. The app is well executed and has smooth scrolling, animated screen previews and a scrollable shortcut dock.

Multicon Widget – Save space with this free widget that let you put more icons on your homescreen. It’s a creative way to package multiple apps in a smaller space.

RealCalc Scientific Calculator – This app gives you a fully featured scientific calculator which looks and operates like the real thing.

Google Sky Map (Entertainment) - One of the first apps you should hit up when getting your new Android phone is Google Sky Map. It turns your phone into a way to browse the sky. Based on your GPS coordinates, you’ll be able to see all constellations, stars and planets.  It’s very fun and a good way to show people one of the coolest apps available.

Barcode Scanner – Barcode Scanner is becoming a necessary app. While the app store offers other excellent Barcode Scanner, such as ShopSaavy, I’ve found the best success with this app.

The Coupons App - This app brings savings and real-time coupons to your fingertips. You can also scan barcodes for local price sharing, texting to a phone, emailing and sending it to Facebook. Just pull the coupon up on your phone and show them at the store to redeem.

Travel & Local Search

Google Earth – Use Google Earth to fly around the planet with the swipe of a finger. Search by voice for cities, places, and businesses. Browse layers including roads, borders, places, photos and more.

Google Maps - With Google Maps, you take advantage of all the goodies the Android provides. Turn-by-turn navigation, 3D Maps, search for locations by using your voice, get traffic, check out the always cool street view and more.

Movies – This app features movie reviews, trailers and showtimes. My favorite aspect is the reviews from Rotten Tomatoes along with the ability to manage my Netflix queue.

My Tracks – My Tracks records your GPS tracks and shows live statistics such as time, speed, distance, and elevation – while hiking, cycling, running or participating in other outdoor activities. Once recorded, you can share your tracks, upload them to Google Spreadsheets, visualize them on Google My Maps and share with friends.

Finance

USAA Mobile (Banking) – You may be surprised to see a banking app on this list, but this one is ridiculously good. Of course, it’s only for USAA members, but if you use USAA you’re going to love this app. The most valuable aspect of this app is the ability to scan your checks and deposit them into your online account, directly from your Android. You can pay your bills, transfer funds, trade stocks, use the loan calculator, locate rental cars and ATMs, request insurance cards, view your insurance claim details and so much more. This is a must-have app if you use USAA.
