Part of the reason behind my low Search Engine % is due to the fact that I recently transferred my site to a domain. Since my URL changed, I had to re-submit to the various search engines and directories. This can take a month or longer for your site to be added.

To increase my traffic from Search Engines, I will need to apply the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) method. I will be utilizing the resources below, but will start by providing an overview.

What is SEO?
SEO is a method of improving your quality & quantity of traffic from search engines results. SEO considers how search engines work & what people search for. SEO can also target different kinds of searches, such as image search.

What does SEO Involve?
Editing your tags & HTML coding can help to increase the relevance to keywords & remove difficulties with the indexing that search engines do.

When should I Incorporate SEO?
It’s actually best to use SEO from when you first develop the site, since the structure of a site as how it relates to your content is also important.

Many consider Google Rankings and the Technorati Rankings to be just as important.

Before I start to dig into Technorati, I must tell you that I am just getting my start with Technorati and am in no way an expert. Technorati is my latest curiousity. I’ve been using Technorati, but nothing more than really just having a presence on their site and an “Add this to your Favorites” badge on my site.

Technorati Lingo
Technorati – Technorati is kind of like Google for blogs. It’s a search engine that indexes, sorts and categorizes blogs. They currently have over 112 million blogs indexed.

Authority – Authority is a way that Technority measures your site by the number of incoming links. Authority is directly related to your ranking with Technorati. The more links of yours that appear in other blogs Technorati recognizes, the higher your authority and Technorati Ranking will be.

How does it Work?
Technorati looks for tags that the author of each blog places on their sites. The tags help to categorize the search results and the most current results will display first.

How to Get Started

  • Join Technorati.
  • Add your blog URL to your profile.
  • Spend some time adding Tags to your blog. Use spaces, rather than commas to seperate. You can also use tag generator tools, such as Ukion.
  • Add the “Add to Technorati Favorites” button to your site.

Tips
Add a Technorati Button - As I mentioned above, add the “Add Technorati to my Favorites” Badge on your site.

Use Technorati Tags in each of your blog posts. According to DetectorPRO, this will help Technorati in indexing your posts. To learn more about the Technorati Tags, continue reading.

Build Your Favorites - When you find blogs you like within Technorati, you can “Favorite Them.” If they have the button displayed on their particular blog, that’s an easy way to add them to your favorites.

Leave Comments – Don’t hesitate to comment on the blogs you like. Many times, if you show you are an interested reader and take the time to leave your comments, the blog author will visit your site as well and sometimes comment. The bigger blogs aren’t as likely to visit and leave comments, due to their high amount of traffic, but leave you link in your signature block and perhaps their other readers will.

Ping Your Blog After Each Post – I use PingMyBlog, but you can also either visit Technorati and manually ping or setup and configure an automatic Ping on your site.

Keep an eye on the “Blog Reactions” – You can see what sites are displaying your links and which keywords are being used. You can find this by clicking on your profile, then your site you added to Technorati. It will display your site, keywords, rankings & authority, latest posts, then you can scroll down to find the “Blog Reactions.”

At the end of the entry, I specified that it could take up to 3 days to fully transfer to my new .Net domain. During the transfer, the only difference I noticed is that I was unable to manage my site from the front page. For any modifications, I had to go into the layout from my dashboard. It was a seemless transition and I still administer my site through Blogspot. The only difference is in the URL.

The main thing I had to do with the new URL was submit my URL to Search Engines and directories and let friends know about my URL change. During this time, I also decided to modify my design layout. Then I took on an experiment by running campaigns in Stumbled Upon and Digg. Much has transpired since my last Alexa Traffic entry. As I noted in my experiment, an overwhelming amount of traffic was pulled in by 20+ Sites to Watch Movies & TV Online.

Since I had to resubmit my URL, I have had “no data” displayed within my Alexa widget. Finally, yesterday Alexa has my rankings listed on their toolbar. So here are the results;

Oct 3rd - 4,130,697
Oct 7th – 3,098,288
Oct 18th – 1,133,260

Alexa isn’t the only major ranking system that counts. Many also consider the Technorati Rankings and Google Rankings when determining the top sites. My Technorati Rankings were at just 1,102,964, but since I had to submit my new URL to them, they dropped to 4,666,062 and I have no authority. I’ll venture more into Technorati in the near future and make an entry specific to Technorati.

I wanted to discuss an outstanding new site I came across, Earners Club – Internet Marketing and Making Money Online Social Bookmarking Site, which has a Digg-like concept. It is specific to marketing and making money online. You can submit articles and use the “Vote” or “Bury” functions. The design, organization and navigation are terrific. You have the ability to integrate your site with the Earners Club by adding their Widgets, which will allow readers of your site to submit your marketing or money earning tips. Though it is a newer site, I really believe this site will take off due to the professional design and business model. Here is a screenshot of the Earner’s Club.

What I did to Increase my Rankings:
1. I downloaded the Alexa Toolbar and have visited my website each day, after installing it.

2. I posted the Alexa Rankings and Tips, which I used and hoped you will too

3. I added a Alexa Widget at the bottom of my page, which shows my traffic rankings and links in. Also, if you click on this widget on my page, you can see many more details about my site or yours if you add it to your page. A few examples are site overview, traffic details, related links, sites linking in and even a wayback machine to see what your site looked like in the past.

4. I posted an article covering the Top 100 Alexa Rated SItes.

5. I had my site listed on DMOZ, which is the largest human edited directory on the web and co-branded with hundreds of thousands of sites. It can take up to 5 months for it to be added after you submit your site.

Note: I had previously already submitted my site to several search engines, prior to taking the steps listed in this entry.

6. I’ve made atleast 1 entry each day since installing the Alexa toolbar. I try to accomplish atleast 2 entries a day.

7. I ping all the directories I submitted my blog to after each entry to ensure my updates are published. This is a great free tool that pings up to 69 sites in one swoop.

8. I set my blog to my home page.

9. I’ve previously added buttons such as Digg, Stumbled Upon, and a Social Bookmarking Button and have also registered and added a button to Technorati.

10. I have made it common practice to include my Blog Address in my signature block of my e-mail and message boards I post on. I also registered on another message forum, Digitalpoint, which is an awesome source of information. You can’t add your blog address to your signature block until you post atleast 10 times and have been a member for a week, but it’s an awesome source of info.

A Few Tips I didn’t Use
1. After reading about the URL redirect in the tips I found in many articles, I found out that redirects no longer work with Alexa.

2. I have not taken an advertisement out on ExactSeek.com, mainly because I didn’t want to pay a few dollars each month. This is supposed help your rankings by being ranked on ExactSeek.

My reactions: I really thought Google would be number one, but currently Alexa sees Yahoo! As the overall #1 site in their web traffic ratings. I’m also surprised to see that Facebook has surpassed Myspace. I also had no clue that Windows Live was ahead of MSN. Definitely an eye opener for me, but this is good knowledge to have.

Why is this information important? When attempting to improve your site rankings, it’s very important to keep an eye on which sites are on top and which are climbing the charts. From submitting our URLs to the top search engines, to utilizing social bookmarking, the rankings can be a tool to assist in showing trends and using it to your advantage to implement them into your site and to gain more visitors.

My thoughts: By just seeing the top 10, I can incorporate most of them into my site. This could help my Alexa rankings grow by opening up the door for more potential traffic. First of all, I see that it is paramount for me to have my URL submitted to Yahoo!, Google, Windows Live and MSN. Also, I’m seeing the importance of providing Facebook and Myspace social bookmarking buttons to my site. I can also host a YouTube video and use links to Wikipedia. That’s just the top 10. I’ll personally be looking through the top 100 to expand upon my approach.

It would also be very worthwhile to keep an eye on Alexa’s Mover’s and Shaker’s, which show the top sites moving up or moving down in web traffic.

If I pave a road to the sites that have the large amounts of web traffic, some of the traffic will eventually use my road, which will take them directly to my site. Does that make sense?

What is Alexa?
Alexa is a subsidiary of Amazon.com that provides information about web traffic.

How does it measure?
Statistics derive from webpage visitors who have the the Alexa toolbar installed. So, the more of your readers who have the Alexa toolbar installed, the higher ranking you’ll get. Your visitors who don’t have it installed aren’t counted and analyzed. The update to their ranking system may help balance this out a bit.

What is the purpose of getting a higher ranking?
The higher your Alexa Ranking, the more worth your link is to advertisers.

Problems?
Alexa doesn’t look at the entire amount of traffic, since many who visit don’t have the toolbar. Their updated ranking system should help with this.

Updates From Alexa
Alexa posted an announcement on their site. They have improved their sources, normalized their traffic globally and created new and improved algorithms, to get better indications of web traffic. This is good news.
