Movies By Flixster (free on the App Store) – Great app to find movie reviews and watch trailers. Sound and video work, but doesn’t expand to the full television screen (black box around video).

Moviefone Movies For iPad (free on the App Store) – Moviefone is the best place to stream and watch movie trailers with video mirroring. It’s fully compatible with video mirroring and streams trailers in HD.

Music Videos

MTV.com/touch – visit MTV.com/touch from Safari. It fully supports video mirroring from their site, but selection of clips is a bit limiting.

Vevo HD (free on the App Store) – fully supports video mirroring and works great! This is the best way to watch live and official music videos.

News

CNN App For iPad (Free at the iTunes App Store) – Video section of this app works with both the audio and video, but doesn’t fully expand to your television screen.

Apps That Don’t Support Video Mirroring Or Require Subscription

Of the apps I’ve tried, here are the ones that either want a cable or satellite login or just doesn’t yet support Video Mirroring.

Newsy – Great app for watching news, but doesn’t yet support video mirroring. You only get the video, but no audio.

Trailers – How can Apple’s brand new app not fully support video mirroring and fail to offer sound when playing movie trailers?

HBO to GO not only requires a subscription, but doesn’t yet offer video mirroring.

MAX GO – see HBO to GO

TBS – you’ll need a subscription, but once you login video mirroring isn’t supported so no sound for you.

TNT – See TBS

Discovery – So you get sound on commercials, but not shows. Hopefully an iOS 5 update will be pushed out soon.

Ordinary TV channels, whether supplied through cable or satellite, are becoming more expensive each day. In spite of the multitude of channels, fewer and fewer programs worth watching are being shown. To make things even worse, shows actually worth watching often have to be paid for separately.

Sports fans, who are typically already paying more on their subscription packages for sports channels, are often forced to pay more to watch certain sporting events. Movie channels, which are also typically paid for in the subscription fees, are showing the same old movies over and over again. New films have to be paid for again.

This is one of the many reasons people are taking to watching Internet TV. Not only is it free, but you can find and stream most sporting events, movies, shows, news, etc. without the extra costs.

As Internet TV can be watched on laptops, mobile devices and smart phones, it’s far more convenient than your living room TV. Gone are the days we need to pay for services such as satellite radio. Instead, we can fulfill all our music and radio needs with streaming apps. These powerful, yet free Android apps let us stream our favorite music and radio stations from around the globe putting us in control of the content we listen to.

I’ve scoured the Android Market, AppBrain and other sources to find the best free streaming radio apps. While an app such as Pandora is an obvious choice, lesser known, yet emerging apps like Digitally Imported Radio can transform our devices into a perfect radio companion.

Best Free Streaming App List On AppBrain

Digitally Imported is specific to electronic music, but is easily the best in its class. The app consists of over a dozen styles with 35 channels in electronic genres such as dance, house, lounge, chillout, techno and more. Once you click on a channel, you get the track name and history of tracks played. To add a channel to your favorites, just perform a long press on the channel.

doubleTwist Player lets you sync your iTunes playlists, podcasts and videos with your Android device. You’ll first need to download the free Mac or PC companion to use AirSync. doubleTwist Player pulls in all your music and videos into its player and has a beautiful interface that organizes by artist, album, video, podcast and more. Click the radio button to explore a large number of radio stations organized by genre.

Pandora Radio is the most prominent app in the listing, but the list would be incomplete without its’ mention. Just search for a song or artist and Pandora does the work for you by building a music station based on artist/song chosen. Pandora syncs with your Pandora account, so you can thumbs up and thumbs down to fully customize your stations.

TuneIn Radio is powerful and my choice for the best free radio station app, boasting 40k channels. Use the search button or browse local radio stations by location to find all your favorites. Once you click on a station, add it to your preset, find similar stations, see the complete broadcasting schedule and even set an alarm and sleep timer. In addition to all the great radio stations, you can also stream podcasts with this app.

Like TuneIn Radio, XiiaLive Lite offers 40k streaming radio channels from around the world. Search, organize, tag, and save your favorite streams. The app supports aac, aac+, m3u, pls, mp3, mp4, m4a and mpeg formats, but will soon offer ogg, asx and wma streaming. Sort by favorites, top hits or genre.

Cut Your Cable Bill & Still Catch Your Favorite Sports, Movies and TV Shows

Earlier this month, I made the decision to cut my cable. I now save approximately $123 per month by dropkicking my Direct TV out the door in exchange for Roku, my computer and an Internet connection.

Note: There are several different devices and applications to use, but I chose to share the ones that have worked the best for me. Just last month, I had a DirecTv Bill that cost me $140 per month and another $60 for cable internet. $200 a month is a ridiculous bill to have with all the free alternatives available. I kept my cable internet and now only pay $17 per month for movies and tv shows using the options below.

Devices To Hookup To Your Television

Roku XD|S ($99.99)

Though I have both a Roku and Apple TV, there is no way I would have cut my cable without Roku. This device requires a high speed wireless connection. It connects directly to your television and streams content to your television from countless channels that include Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon On Demand, Pandora, Flickr and more. While you won’t find YouTube in the channel lineup for the Roku player, you can manually add this awesome channel using these simple setup steps. You could get by with the Roku alone, but let me show you some more options.

Computer & Free Media Software

I keep my laptop connected to my television using a HDMI cable. You would be amazed to see how many of your favorite shows are available for free online. I am a big Survivor fan and can simply go to CBS.com the day after Survivor airs to stream the newest episode. With my computer connected to my television, it’s just like watching it on TV.

Roku cost me $100 to purchase and there is no monthly or additional fees. Some of the channels available requires a pay subscription to use. I pay $9 per month to stream movies from Netflix and $8 each month to stream television shows. If I can’t find content on either of these channels, my next option is to see if it’s online.

You can turn your computer into a media server by downloading some pretty awesome free applications such as Windows Media Center or XBMC. Windows Media Center has an Internet TV window channel does the work for you by finding great shows from online sources.

If it’s not online and it’s a show or movie I really want to see, I can pay to rent it from the Amazon On Demand channel. An episode typically cost $1.99.

Antenna

Want to still get free local channels? By using the AntennaWeb tool, you can see what the ideal Antenna would be for you to purchase. Based on my area, once I have my Antenna set up, I should get more than 20 channels (including HD) free. My Antenna cost $35 from Amazon.

Want to Stream More Free Movies And Television?

While I could provide an exhaustive listing of free movie and tv sites, I’m going to instead point you to an amazing resource. OVGuide shows you all the best free movie sites and by using the useful search button, you can find movies and television shows you want to watch.

A Last Resort

If you decide you just can’t cut the cord on your cable or satellite, at least take some time and search online for better deals than you’ll get through Best Buy or over the phone. Many third party service providers like TvByDirect.com offer local specials that include free channels. While not as cost effective as going full-streaming, you can definitely cut a large portion of your bill.

How To: Add The YouTube Channel To Your Roku Device

If you’re looking for ways to cut the cable and weighing the options, chances are you’re probably looking at the channel lineup the different devices offer. You can get a YouTube Channel on Google TV, Boxee and Apple TV. Where is YouTube on the Roku channel list, you may ask. Turns out you can get YouTube on your Roku device by following these steps.

1. From your computer, visit Roku and login to your account

2. Enter B8VVK

3. From your Roku, access your Channel Store, then exit to refresh

Note: if you get an “insufficient space error” message, you’ll need to remove a few channels to free up enough space. You’ll also know when you’ve freed up enough space as your YouTube Channel will load.

That’s it! Now you can enjoy another channel that illustrates just how awesome the Roku device is.

Turning on the radio these days is like Ground Hogs Day. Well, perhaps it’s always been that way with a small collection of songs that get played over and over and over again until you’re completely sick of hearing them. If you’re like me, you want to hear some new stuff that may or may not find its way on your radio. While many have transitioned to listening to their iPod and music player, as opposed to the radio, I’ve got 10 awesome sites you’re going to want to check out.

Some of the music you’ll find in the sites below will blow you away. Check it out.

Deezer - Deezer provides instant access to 7 million tracks, with themed radio, artist news/albums/tracks, playlist sharing, personalization and the ability to watch videos and find new artists.

Grooveshark - Grooveshark lets you search, stream and upload music free. The recommendation system is cool, similar to Pandora, but with a smiley face or sadpanda rather than the thumbs up or thumbs down approach.

The Hype Machine – The Hype Machine is an MP3 Aggregator. It’s a “one stop shopping of postings from thousands of MP3 Blogs,” according to Wikipedia. It displays the latest songs from the top 25 blogs and consistently updates the entries and songs onto it’s site.

Jamendo - Jamendo is a community of free, legal and unlimited music published under Creative Commons licenses. Share your music, download your favorite artists!

Last.fm - Last.fm is an internet radio site that claims to have over 21 million users. They use a music recommendation system called an Audioscrobbler and build a detailed profile of each user’s taste, based on the songs you choose. They have social networking features and you can save playlists and share once you register.

Musicovery: Interactive WebRadio – Musicovery is interactive and customized so you can find music based on which type of mood you are in. According to Wikipedia, this is a good site to find rare and undiscovered music. The more you listen and rate songs, the more personalized it gets. You can just choose the genre of music, 80′s/90′s/etc. and mood. It will then show a graphical mapping display of the songs that will play.

Pandora - Just type in an artist or song you like and Pandora responds by playing similar music. You can give feedback by approving a thumbs up or down and Pandora takes it into account for future songs. You need to register to save your playlists that Pandora creates.

Pitchfork – Pitchfork is a really cool guide to independent music, news, music discovery, album reviews and so much more.

TheSixtyOne - This site gives new artists the ability to upload and share their work and let you decide if you like it. You then have the ability to purchase their albums and merchandise within the site. This site is great for new artists in that they receive atleast $7 per album, as opposed to record labels.

Songza: The Music Search Engine & Internet Jukebox - Songza is a big internet search engine that plays the songs and artists you type in by searching files on the net and playing them. It’s not an internet radio station, it specifically plays what you request. You can still rate songs, create playlists and share them.

Looking for Apps in the Android Market can be a bit overwhelming since the pool of Apps is growing exponentially. This gives me a very good excuse to continue to cover all the best Android Apps. Poll Results: Sorry Apple & Google TV, Home PC is Preferred Cable TV Alternative

Each week, a new poll is introduced at FiveFreeApps to get your take on a topic that’s on many of our minds. Though the poll provides a small sample size, the results never fail to surprise me.

This week, I asked “what is the best cable/satellite TV alternative?” With new and exciting gadgets launching such as Apple TV, Google TV, Boxee Box and more, there is no all-in-one solution yet which makes it’s a challenge to determine which to use or whether to wait. I discussed these options in my weekly posting at madTREEHOUSE.

In this economy, our cable bill is one of the few bills that continually rise as cable companies are beginning to price themselves out of our living rooms.

The results were overwhelmingly in favor of using home PCs as the alternative, but let’s take a closer look.

What’s the best cable/satellite TV alternative?

Over 43% of respondents would choose their home computer to take the place of their cable or satellite service. Finishing in a distant second, 17% preferred Google TV even though all the major networks are blocking their content from Google TV. Over 13% liked their XBox 360 as an alternative, while approximately 9% would rather use the Boxee Box.

Perhaps the most shocking results in my opinion was the lack of interest in the Apple TV, Roku, Playstation 3 and Wii, which never garnered nearly the amount of votes the big three had.
